Statement on the esclation of violence in Sudan

SOS Children’s Villages International expresses deep concern over continued escalation of violence in Sudan, particularly the horrifying reports emerging from the Darfur region, where thousands of civilians have lost their lives and have been forced to flee their homes.

We call for an immediate end to the attacks on civilians, and unimpeded humanitarian access for the delivery of life saving goods and services. We urge the international community to intensify their diplomatic and political efforts to end the conflict. With the massive displacement of civilians, heightened support is needed for local response to trace and reunite children with their family members.

“Children across Sudan are living through one of the most devastating crises in the country’s history,” says Limia Ahmed, Deputy National Director, SOS Children’s Villages in Sudan. “Millions have been forced to flee their homes, and many have lost access to school, healthcare, and safe shelter. Every day, children face growing risks of hunger, disease, and exploitation, while their sense of safety and normalcy continues to wear down.

“In SOS Children’s Villages Sudan’s programmes, we continue to reach children and families with protection, and psychosocial support wherever access allows. Despite immense challenges, our colleagues remain dedicated to ensuring that children in our care are safe, supported, and not forgotten.”

Famine has been declared in North Darfur, including El Fasher and surrounding areas, where tens of thousands of children are being treated for severe acute malnutrition. El Fasher is overwhelmed by death and displacement, reflecting the wider crisis across Sudan. More than 21 million people face catastrophic levels of hunger, and over 10 million have been forced to flee their homes, over half of them children, making this the largest child-displacement crisis in the world

Children remain the most affected by this conflict. Many have been separated from their families and are also victims to one or more of the grave violations towards children in conflict, including: killing and maiming; sexual violence; abduction; attacks against schools or hospitals and denial of humanitarian access.

We strongly condemn the ongoing hostilities and all forms of violence that continue to cause immense suffering to the Sudanese people. The global community must act with courage and urgency.

SOS Children’s Villages International stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan, particularly children and families caught in the violence, and we reaffirm our commitment to continue supporting affected communities through our programmes, advocacy, and humanitarian response.
